Care Leavers

If you have grown up in the care system or are about to leave it, you might be wondering what your next steps are. You might be interested in working in a care sector, where you can use your personal experience and skills to help others who need support and care. A career in care is rewarding, challenging, and diverse. You can make a positive difference in the lives of people who need support and care. 

You might think that care work is not for you, but you have many transferrable skills and experience that are valuable in the care sector. For example, you might have: 

  • Empathy and compassion 

  • Communication and interpersonal skills 

  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills 

  • Resilience and adaptability 

  • Organisation and planning skills 

  • Self-confidence and independence 

The Care Learning Academy is a partnership between Staffordshire County Council, Stoke-on-Trent City Council, the local Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care System and Skills for Care. It aims to provide information on a career in care, along with access to our learning portal to build on your existing skills and learn new skills. 

How to get started? 

Throughout the site there is a wealth of information on starting your career in care. If you are interested in joining the Care Learning Academy, you can sign up to our learning portal. Signing up to the academy will provide you with access to the learning portal, which provides access to a range of learning opportunities.
